Real Childhood Talks – Live Event in Brooklyn, NY

Real Childhood Talks – Live Event in Brooklyn, NY

After a year of brainstorming, jotting down ideas and constantly thinking about bringing moms of young children together with experts in the field of early childhood development, I finally set a date and it happened.   Real Childhood Talks came to life on October 8, 2017.  It was such a proud moment for me, not only because I had amazing sponsors, inspirational guest speakers and real moms asking real questions, but also because I pushed through my fears and saw it through to completion. I have to be real about what it really took to make my vision come to life. Of course, I can write a perfect post about the event, show amazing pictures and video, but there’s so much more that goes into planning an event and actually executing. I can say that fear is real, but the strength we posess is stronger. The process of creating this event made me realize the importance of support, collaboration and not being superwoman. I was able to reach out for support from friends, family, bloggers, co-workers and I was able to collaborate with sponsors and find an amazing space to host the event. One of my biggest takeaways from all of this is “If you walk through the fear there’s something amazing on the other side.”

Now on to the event recap. Powerful is the word I use to sum up the 2 hours of event time for Real Childhood Talks. It was powerful because everyone that attended the event was truly a part of the conversation. Guest were allowed to share their experiences, ask questions, support one another and leave with valubale information. What makes it even more powerful is that all of the information will ultimately change the life of a young child and that is my ulitmate goal. Dr. Swan Brown Ronde and Dr Kristin J. Carothers left us with plenty to think about and even more to work on as parents, educators and professionals that have the privelege of having young children in our lives. One critical point that Dr. Ronde made was about the importance of Self-Care, especially for moms. How can we take care of a young child without taking care of ourselves. That is a hard truth pill to swallow, but it’s so true. I talked about this in recently and can watch that video right here, SELF CARE VIDEO.  Below is the event recap video, so you can get an idea of the vibe we had going on.  I hope you’ll be a part of the next conversation. Don’t worry, the next event is coming soon.

Dr. Carothers talked about tantrums and ways on decreasing a tantrum that a child may be exepriecneing. I know you’ll want to watch what she had to say, so that video is coming soon along with more video clips from the event. What made the event even more special was that the conversation shifted into another important topic, the importance of the teacher/parent relationship. Communciation is key between both parties, but how do you cultivate that realtionship? Great question, right? Well, we talked about it with everday parents and everyday teachers, all of whom were guest at the event. I now realize even more than I did before that this event platform is needed, it’s wanted and people will show up. I’m not going to just stop at the live events, I also want to continue these conversations online, where so many of you are. Chat with me on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and of course right here on the blog.

I’d like to take the time to thank my two sponsors for believeing in me and taking the time to be a part of Real Childhood Talks.
I first tried Kaiso Cocktail at a wine and food festival in Brooklyn, NY. I fell in love with it after my first sip. I immediately thought of girls-night-in, parties and my mommy friends, becasue they’re always looking for a great cocktail. I knew this would be the perfect cocktail for an afternoon of real conversations. Kaiso Cocktail brought island flavors to the guest in a glass over ice. You have to try it. Check out their website here, www.kaisococktail.com

I was introduced to the owner of The Brown Crayon Project by the owner of Kaiso Cocktail. Talk about women empowerment and #BlackGirlMagic. Yes, it was all of that. The Brown Crayon Project brings quality hair and skin products to the forefront for our young children of color. From the names of the products like, Sunday Oil, which she gave as a gift to all of our guest, to the packaging, it highlights the importance of our own self-care in our community. They are teaching children the importance of caring for self starting at a young age. I appreciate what Selma is doing for young children and families of color. I support her mission and hope you will as well.  Please check out The Bown Crayon Project website and products. Happy shopping!

Cheers,
Monica J

How to Get Kids to Stay at the Dinner Table Longer – Family Dinners

How to Get Kids to Stay at the Dinner Table Longer – Family Dinners

Family Dinners – How to Get the Kids to Stay at the Table Longer

by Monica J
There was a time when having dinner together as a family was the highlight of the day in most American homes. This would be the time of day when the entire family would come together and wrap up the day by discussing important events and catching up with one another. These days, fewer families are taking advantage of family dinners by making it a special family time. Often, modern family dinners are marked with long, uncomfortable silences as kids sullenly wait to be excused. Parents don’t know how to get the kids to stay at the dinner table longer. It’s possible to change so that the dinner table is transformed back into the lively community gathering it ought to be, but it will take a lot of effort and patience.

First, make sure that your entire family knows that family dinners are a designated family time. Everyone ought to make it a priority, especially the parents. If you and your spouse are checking your watches or jumping up to get the phone, it’s no wonder that your children can’t wait to flee the table. Lead by example. Turn off your cell phone, turn off the television, and commit to sitting and eating with your family until everybody’s finished.

You can also try to make family dinners more fun for the kids every once in a while. Try having fun theme nights once a week, like breakfast for dinner or an indoor picnic on the living room floor. If you can afford it, try going out to eat as a family every once in a while. If you’re away from home, the kids won’t have a room to want to go to. And do your best to serve food that’s delicious as well as healthful. If your kids don’t like the food, they’ll be far less inclined to want to stay at the table.

And if you want to stimulate conversation at the dinner table, practice talking to your kids in other contexts, too. The more comfortable they are talking to you, the more willing they’ll be to talk to you in front of the rest of your family members. And even more importantly than talking to them, practice listening to them. If you’re always interrupting them to interject their thoughts, they’ll be frustrated. Let them have their say, even if you’re dying to interject. They’ll be more willing to listen to you once you’ve listened to them, at family dinners and everywhere else.

Family Travel – Becoming Closer by Traveling Together

Family Travel – Becoming Closer by Traveling Together

Traveling as a family can be a very fun experience. It is usually rare nowadays for whole families, both parents and children, to spend time doing activities together. Siblings may go out bowling together, parents may go out to dinner together, or all the children might accompany only one of the parents to the mall, but the whole family usually does not get to do something altogether. There are good reasons for this. One might be that the parents’ schedules do not usually coincide. Another reason might be that the children’s interests do not mesh. In addition, the parents’ schedules may not match up with their children’s. All of these lead to less quality time spent together. Family traveling, however, can amend that. On top of that, the lessons learned from family traveling are plenty.

Some lessons learned from family traveling involve discovering stuff about other family members. Traveling together with the family means a lot of quality time spent together. This means that there is a lot of bonding going on during family trips. People are usually so busy on regular days that family members normally do not get to communicate with each other that often. Therefore, family traveling can facilitate conversations among family members that would not have been shared otherwise and finding out stuff about their siblings or parents that they had not known before. They will also share a lot of fun activities together during this time. All of these serve to help strengthen the family connection and this can help instill family values as a result.

What helps facilitate family togetherness on family vacations is that people are usually in really close quarters the whole time. If they are driving or flying to their destination, they will be really close to each other from departure to arrival. When they get to their destination, there is a good chance that they will all be staying in one room through the night. They will also be doing activities together during the day. Therefore, traveling together is a good way for the family to learn about each other. Lessons learned from family traveling may also include realizing how little time they get to spend with each other normally.

If they are traveling to places where a lot more people are less fortunate, they might learn lessons about taking stuff for granted and how fortunate they should feel that they are all together. The lessons learned from family traveling are numerous. The most important lessons, though, are about how important family actually is.
