Oh how I love Play-Doh, actually any dough meant for play. Okay Play-Doh just happens to be one of my favorite brands and the one I grew up having all kinds of fun with. As an Early Childhood Teacher this is one of my go to staples that are a must when it comes to fun and learning. Kids love to create and manipulate PlayDough. Anytime, you whip out the PlayDough just know that your kids are going to have a valuable learning experience. Chances are they won’t even know they’re learning or building necessary developmental skills.
This type of play focuses on the strengthening of your child’s fine motor skills, which are building their small muscles in their hands and fingers. Your children can also work on using their imagination, language skills, social skills and even math skills. There are so many positive benefits of play with PlayDough. The possibilities are endless.
You may also want to add a few props to your child’s play which will extend the learning experience. Look around your house for these added bonuses, no need to go on a shopping run. You can give them old games pieces, craft sticks (Popsicle sticks), plastic utensils, blocks, toys and more. Make sure you open your mind up, use your imagination and jump in on the play with your child.
Now, for the parents who aren’t so keen on the commercial dough brands, well then you can surely make your own at home. There’s even a gluten-free PlayDough recipe I’ve stumbled upon. Check out the recipes I’ve found across the Internet below. My replay video of me actually showing you how to make the gluten-free play dough will be coming soon to the blog.

Play-Doh Receipes From Across the Internet
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup salt
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
1 cup flour
Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm.
Remove from heat and add flour.
Stir, then knead until smooth. The cream of tartar makes this dough last 6 months or longer, so resist the temptation to omit this ingredient if you don’t have it on hand.
Store this dough in an airtight container or a Ziploc freezer bag.
No Bake Play-Doh
large mixing bowl
1 cup water
4 cups flour
2 to 4 tablespoons of cooking oil (we used Canola)
1 1/2 cups of salt
food coloring (we used red and blue to make purple)
Pour water into a large mixing bowl.
Next add food coloring. We added generous amounts of red and blue food coloring to make purple, which seemed like a galactic color! Once you add the food coloring to the water, stir well.
Add the dry ingredients ( flour and salt) to the mix. You can stir a little at this point to begin blending the ingredients.
Next add 2 to 4 tablespoons of oil. You can add more oil later if the mix seems to dry. Oil is the secret to keeping this “no cooking required” recipe soft! If you don’t add enough oil, the mix will be very crumbly.
This next step is a big hit with kids! Add generous amounts of glitter to your mix and begin mixing everything together.
Knead the ingredients together until a soft dough is formed.
To store, simply roll the dough into small balls and keep in plastic bags or a plastic container!
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup corn starch
3/4 cup water
The one thing I loved to do as a child was color. It was a treat when my mother would buy me a new box of crayons, which I looked forward to at the beginning of every school year. Cracking open that new box of crayons was special. The smell of my Crayola Crayons brought me joy and the pointed tips of all of the crayons made me smile from ear to ear. I always pondered for minutes deciding which crayon I would color with first. So, a few weeks ago when I was given the opportunity to customize my very own box of 64 Crayola Crayons, I was ready.
Now, I’m not that 7-year-old girl anymore, but I’m an Early Childhood Special Education teacher who works with children everyday. Oh, and they love to color. Since I run from school to school throughout the day, I have to pack all of my teaching supplies in my bag. Guess what my #1 teacher supply is? You guessed it, a box of Crayola Crayons. It’s a must!
Now, I’m so excited because I get to show my students the new Ms. Monica Crayon Box. My custom box will spark great conversation with my students because I have a fun picture on it. Since I was in total control of this customization, I had to make it fun. I’m all about the fun for kids in case you didn’t know. My final box has a picture of me with Elmo, Cookie Monster and my name on it. It’s so perfect. Check it out.
The actual experience of customizing the crayon box on the Crayola My Way Site was so easy and actually fun. The only downfall with my box is that the picture came out a little darker than I wanted. However, I realize the quality of the image you use has to be good (high resolution), in order for the final product to come out just right. These custom boxes make great gifts for birthday parties, I think for teachers and for my students. I want to get the small 8 count crayon boxes customized for my students for end of the year gifts. Instead of putting their names, I would write a positive message that they will always have with them every time they pick up their box. I always encourage my students to be creative and trust their imaginations, so I’m sure their custom message would be centered on that.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Today, along with many others across the country, I’m celebrating the birthday of one of the most beloved authors. Dr. Seuss is one of my favorite children’s book authors and has been since I was a little girl. For the last 15 years I’ve been able to experience the joy of sharing his magic with my students. If you’ve read any Dr. Seuss book then you know that his books are both entertaining and educational. There are so many educational benefits hidden in the pages of his books.
He had a unique writing style, which keeps kids and adults laughing and wondering how he came up with those lines. Along with the laughter comes building on vocabulary, engagement, imagination, literacy skills, an introduction to rhyming and a love of reading. This books are jam-packed with learning. So, grab your favorite Dr. Seuss book and share it with your children today. Share how you celebrated Dr. Seuss Birthday with me below in the comment section or on the So Family Facebook page. Can’t wait to hear from you. Happy reading!

It’s another craft for kids post. I am all about a fun DIY for myself and of course for the kids. Throughout my years of teaching I’ve realized that kids always enjoy putting things together or creating. They really enjoy being independent and completing task on their own. I’ve had positive feedback from kids every time I introduce a DIY project. They always fall in love with DIY, especially the ones from Alex Toys. Within he last year Alex Toys introduced new DIY kits that are geared towards boys. Today’s Weekly Favorites video features the Rip & Stick Duct Tape Wallet Kit from Alex Toys. Boys can make their own wallet using duct tape. This is the perfect crafting activity for boys who love to design and create. This kit even comes with a stencil sheet that allows the crafter to create their own stickers, which they can apply to their wallet. Of course, I had to review this product on an episode of Weekly Favorites with Monica J. I had an amazing co-host, JD (@JDPtrags), to assist me with this review. He did an amazing job designing his wallet. Check out the fun we had. Watch Episode 40 now. Enjoy!
Calling all Crayola fans. This Holiday I’ve been creating Cling art all around the house and with my students in school. I have to admit designing clings, using the Crayola Cling Creator, has been a hit. Kids love it and honestly so do the adults. It’s a fun project that can be led by the kids and of course supervised by the adults. If you know me, then you know I’m all about a hands on experience for kids. The Cling Creator makes hands on fun easy. The steps are simple to follow and great for children new to project kits or following step by step directions.
So, I had the opportunity to review the Cling Creator for the Holidays and I had so much fun doing it. My reviews not only consist of me having my own fun, which is just like reliving childhood, but it also means getting my students involved. And I have to tell you it’s kid and teacher approved for FUN and Creativity. I actually got to create custom Holiday trees using the design molds that come in the package.
