LeapFrog has released a new children’s app called My Robot Friend.  The app is rated 9+, for ages 9 and older, but I honestly feel it’s appropriate for younger children.  I found that some of the levels were challenging for younger children and would serve as a great learning device.  I really appreciated the challenge it gave younger children and that’s why I decided to use it with my 4 and 5 year old students.  This app is definitely centered around lessons and learning with a host of skills. These skills range from math, logic, problem solving, puzzle solving and sequencing. When I introduced my students, individually, to the app they were excited to play. One look at that Robot and they were ready to start the game. I have to admit the game is sometimes a little slow when loading a new board, which can sometimes throw my students off.  However, the challenge of some of the boards kept them engaged.  Watch the app in action below.

Players have to lead their robot to the treasure or save monkeys during the game.  Players are able to select their robot of choice prior to playing the game.  You can also allow children to save their individual progress, which is great for teachers and parents with more than one child.  A few of my favorite things from this app are the set up of the boards, the ability to count the spaces,  the ease of changing the view of the board, the ability to customize your robot and the new vocabulary that young players learn (i.e. north. South, east, west).  The only negative I have about this app is that when a player is counting the spaces the game is so sensitive that it makes it hard for the player to count without constantly staring over.  Overall, the My Robot app is turning out to be a favorite amongst my students and me.  It’s fun and educational.
