Congrats to LeVar Burton and the Reading Rainbow team for reaching their $1 million goal on Kickstarter in less than one day. I was an 80’s kid and definitely glued to the television for the Reading Rainbow episodes. What I loved most about the episodes was the feeling of going on a journey or a new adventure all while learning something new. Reading is truly a way to escape to a new world. I will always be a supporter of the Reading Rainbow.
The PBS show ran for an amazing 26 years. Now the show has been created just for today’s children in the form of an app. LeVar Burton and his company RRKidz is looking to produce a Web-based version, so they can reach even more children. “While 97% of children have access to the internet, only 33% have access to a tablet. ” says Burton to the Verge. Read Burton’s message on his Kickstarter page below.
I believe that every child has a right, and a need, to be literate. We have a responsibility to prepare our children… and right now, the numbers show that we, as a society, are failing in that responsibility. And here’s the problem: Right now, 1 out of every 4 children in America will grow up illiterate.
